What Is The Abortion Pill?

880-800

The abortion pill is one method used to terminate a pregnancy. Because it uses drugs and doesn't require surgery, it's also known as a medical abortion.

There are certain qualifications and risks with the abortion pill. Make sure you're familiar with them before you schedule an appointment with an abortion clinic.

How Does It Work?

The abortion pill uses two powerful drugs over a 24 to 48 hour period to terminate a pregnancy. The two drugs are mifepristone and misoprostol.

All pregnancies need a hormone known as progesterone to grow and continue developing. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the uterus from absorbing progesterone. Without this vital hormone, the pregnancy is terminated.

The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo through the vagina. The mix of both drugs causes bleeding (sometimes heavy) and cramping.

Who Can Use This Method?

There is a time limit for when the abortion pill method can be used. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of mifepristone to end a pregnancy 70 days or less from the first day of a woman's last menstrual period.

Sound confusing? It doesn't have to be if you get a limited obstetrical ultrasound exam. An ultrasound will provide an accurate date when your pregnancy began. The average price for ultrasound in New Jersey is $242. Choices Options for Women provides free and confidential ultrasounds.

Is The Abortion Pill Safe?

There are both side effects and risks with taking the abortion pill. The Mayo Clinic lists the side effects as:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Nausea and possible vomiting
  • Fever with chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

Additional side effects include emotional and psychological health consequences such as grief, a sense of loss, anxiety, and depression.

The Mayo Clinic lists the potential risks of medical abortion as:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may require a follow-up surgical abortion
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort
