What Can I Do if My Partner Doesn't Support My Pregnancy?

An unexpected pregnancy is difficult enough, but without the support of those closest to us, it can feel overwhelming. Ultimately, the decision about your pregnancy is yours and yours alone. No one can force you to make a decision you don't want to make.

Sometimes, when a partner doesn't support a pregnancy, they insist on an abortion. Your partner may not want to be responsible for parenting or may be concerned about finances, but you have other options.

Contact Choices for support and answers. We're here to help you. The following are a few steps you can take to determine what's right for your future.

Determining Your Next Steps

Have you confirmed your pregnancy? A positive pregnancy test and a late period are not enough to determine if your pregnancy is developing. You need an ultrasound scan.

Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. You can still get a positive pregnancy test result for days or weeks following a miscarriage.

A Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs our ultrasounds to determine viability (if it's developing), the location, and how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Looking at Your Options

You have three: have an abortion, make an adoption plan, or choose to parent. If your partner is against your pregnancy, we doubt they're interested in parenting, but that doesn't mean that option isn't right for you.

In addition, you receive assistance with medical and hospital care, legal representation, long-term counseling, and the opportunity to continue a relationship with your child and their family.

Determining If Your Relationship Is Healthy or Abusive

If your partner doesn't support your pregnancy, it's essential to consider whether your relationship with your partner is healthy or abusive. In a healthy relationship, each partner should respect the other's feelings and opinions.

If you feel like your partner isn't respecting your decision, or he's pressuring you to choose a pregnancy option you disagree with, this is a sign of abuse. Although it may be challenging, you should consider moving forward without your partner.
