Those four words, "I think I'm pregnant," can strike fear in the heart of any man. You weren't planning on her becoming pregnant, and you had no intentions of being a dad right now. So what do you do?

We understand how you're feeling. Your shock, concern, and even fear are real. Although our name is Choices Options for Women's Health, we're here for you, too. We have male consultants available to talk with you as you navigate this news. Reach out to us. We can help in more ways than you may initially expect.

Where to Begin?

Your first step is to confirm her pregnancy with a free pregnancy test administered by our licensed Registered Nurse or clinical manager. Even if she's taken a home test and her period is late, there's still a possibility that she's not pregnant.

Experts estimate that 10 to 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Some research suggests that more than 30 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage, many before a woman even realizes she's pregnant.

Because it's possible to get a positive pregnancy test days or even weeks after a miscarriage, we'll schedule her for an ultrasound free of charge. Ultrasound verifies if the pregnancy is developing or if she's miscarried. She'll also learn if the pregnancy's location is correct and how far along she is.

Encourage her to set up an appointment at Choices Options for Women's Health. You're welcome to come with her!

She's Pregnant: Now What?

Before we talk about your next steps, here's what you should not do:

  • Don't ghost her.
  • Don't tell her you'll do whatever she wants. No one should have to make this decision alone.
  • Don't pressure her to make one decision over another.

Here's what you should do:

  • Listen to her. She needs a safe place to share her feelings and fears. She needs to know she can depend on you to hear her thoughts.
  • Accompany her to her appointments. She will appreciate your presence in the waiting room or during her ultrasound scan.
  • Share your feelings and concerns. While it's your partner's choice, it's critical to voice your opinions.
