Every woman's pregnancy is unique. Some women experience pregnancy symptoms immediately, while others don't feel anything for weeks or months.

There are several common symptoms caused by an increase in pregnancy hormones, such as nausea, sore breasts, fatigue, and the need to urinate frequently. Another symptom that pregnant women may experience is moodiness.

The Mayo Clinic reports that some pregnant women may experience depression, causing "persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest in daily activities." The team at Choices Options for Women never wants you to feel alone or emotionally uneasy about your pregnancy.

We offer a wealth of free services to assist you emotionally, physically, and financially throughout your pregnancy. Schedule an appointment and let us help you.

Your Mental Health Is as Important as Your Physical Health

Research suggests that 7% to 9% of women experience depression during pregnancy. Symptoms of depression can range from anxiety about your baby to substance abuse.

If you're not eating well because you are depressed, your baby isn't getting the nourishment they need. Depression can lead to a lack of energy, which means you may not be visiting your OB/GYN regularly.

You may be at a greater risk for postpartum depression and the inability to bond with your baby after giving birth. Undiagnosed and untreated depression can also lead to heart problems for you and your baby.

Pregnant women dealing with depression are more likely to have babies with lower birth weight and poorer health who stay in the hospital longer. The following are clues that you might be depressed during pregnancy:

  • Anxiety
  • Low self-esteem
  • Lack of interest in the pregnancy
  • Little response to social support
  • Not getting proper prenatal care
  • Substance abuse
  • Poor nutrition
